Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation is a treatment option offered to patients that suffer from dental anxiety, severe gag reflex or low pain tolerance. This form of sedation can improve the patient experience of dental care, as it has an amnesic effect- which means most patients don’t remember having the treatment at all!

It can also act as a sense deprivator - meaning sensitive gag reflexes and intolerance to pain is improved.

Following Conscious Sedation patients are advised to recover at home, taking it easy for the rest of the day. It is advised to have the day off work as you may feel drowsy for some time after the treatment.

What is Conscious IV Sedation?

IV (or Intra-venous) sedation is a method of treatment for patients who suffer from issues such as severe dental anxiety or require extensive dental treatment.

How does Conscious Sedation work?

During conscious IV sedation, the patient is administered medication. This medication will induce a drowsy and relaxed feeling, allowing you to stay calm and sedated throughout their treatment. Many patients feel the medication has an amnesic affect so they hardly remember the experience at all.

Will I be awake during the treatment?

Although you will not be completely unconscious, many patients feel drowsy and sleep throughout their dental appointment. Few patients have any memory of their treatment. Patients undergoing Conscious sedation must have a friend or family member to chaperone them to and from the practice. It is advised not to drive to or from the appointment as you may still feel drowsy following the treatment.
